I String Quartet
This is a three movement piece. The short and slow introduction in the first movement blends into sonata allegro – Allegro ben moderato – with the energetic, even impulsive first theme and lyrical second theme. Both themes are lead through all instruments in different registers, colours and harmonic background.
The second movement has a form of passacaglia variation with a peaceful narration. The tempo initially quiet and slow gradually builds up and culminates and than finishes gently and quietly. The third movement is a free form of rondo with the characteristic recurrent first theme. The lively tempo stops suddenly before the end to go back for a while to the style from the introduction – similarly when one recalls events from past. This is followed by cheerful and lively music which closes the piece.
